A DISCOVERY WORTH SHARING

Cipher once meant zero

Cipher originally meant the number zero in English. The word comes through French and Medieval Latin from Arabic sifr, which literally meant something empty or nothing.

Why it’s interesting

Only later did cipher develop other meanings, including coded writing and a system for secret communication.
