A DISCOVERY WORTH SHARING

Avocado has a surprising Nahuatl connection

Avocado comes through Spanish from Nahuatl ahuakatl. The Nahuatl word also had a secondary meaning “testicle,” probably because of a perceived resemblance.

Why it’s interesting

The modern fruit name therefore carries a body-related association from the language in which Europeans first encountered it.
