A DISCOVERY WORTH SHARING
Cherry was created by mistaking a singular for a plural
English inherited a form similar to French cherise. Speakers treated the final -s sound as if it marked a plural, so they removed it and created the new singular cherry.
Why it’s interesting
This process is called reanalysis: people reshape a word because they interpret its parts differently.
