A DISCOVERY WORTH SHARING

A nightmare once meant a night demon

A nightmare was not originally simply a bad dream. In medieval English, the second part, mare, meant an evil spirit or goblin believed to press on sleepers and cause a feeling of suffocation.

Why it’s interesting

The meaning later shifted from the imagined creature to the frightening experience, and finally to any very bad dream.
